‘I played cupcake roulette with Deliveroo and my face says it all’

Today eight cupcakes were delivered to my door, topped with swirly blue frosting and a chocolate disc brandishing the Deliveroo logo.

But these weren’t any old cupcakes… they’re part of the food delivery company’s new game ‘cupcake roo-lette’ to celebrate their eighth birthday.

Each cupcake features a different, mysterious flavour that is intended to taste like the nation’s favourite foods – but from the outside, they all look exactly the same.

Inspired by some of Deliveroo’s most popular orders, flavours include Katsu curry, chips and gravy, spicy burrito as well as Peri Peri.

All completely vegan and costing just 80p for the set, the unique cakes will be available exclusively on Deliveroo this weekend on March 6 and 7.

I had the chance to give the game a go ahead of the launch and it was a good bit of fun – I think my face in the pictures says it all really.

It’s a very odd experience to try cakes that don’t taste anything like you expect them to.

Biting into each cupcake, I was anticipating a traditional sweet vanilla taste, only to be met with Peri Peri spices, curry flavour and strong smokey bacon – some worked well, but others didn’t exactly tantalise my tastebuds.

You just never quite knew what you were going to get and as such the game proved challenging as at times I struggled to pinpoint exactly what I was eating.

Deliveroo commissioned food scientists, The Robin Collective, to exclusively create the eight takeaway flavoured cupcakes which are all completely vegan. To ensure all flavours are distinctive in taste, the method of reverse confit was used to pull through the recognisable top notes associated with each dish.

The full list of cupcake flavours include cheeseburger, margherita pizza, smokey bacon butty, katsu curry, matcha mochi, chips and gravy, spicy burrito and Peri Peri.

Deliveroo spokesperson Aisha Jefferson, said: “From family gatherings, date nights, lunch served al desko, to delivering last-minute birthday snacks and cakes, Deliveroo has been here to deliver the nation’s favourite food for eight years and counting.

“We wanted to share our 8th birthday with everyone by creating a cake feast of our favourite takeaways, giving customers the chance to spin the wheel and try the weirdest and wonderful vegan cupcakes anyone has ever tasted!”

Brits can help celebrate Deliveroo turning eight by ordering the food game to their door from Deliveroo Editions in London and Manchester for 80p from 12pm on 6th March until 7th March, or until sold out.
